The Last Kiss

Soma Ghosh Monica:

O Chariot of Time, whose wheels blaze with fire,

Whose wings beat the vault of heaven-

Stay thy course!

Hold, O blazing steeds, upon the wind,

That I may press my mortal lips

To hers, the lips more radiant than dawn.

Once more, but once, let the gift be mine—

O Thetis, goddess of the deep,

Mother of immortal tides,

Grant me to rest upon thy sacred knees,

To breathe the breath that knows no dying,

And seal it with a drowsy kiss,

Warm upon thy deathless mouth.

O Time—thou furious, unwearied god—

Hast thou the wings of fire?

Hast thou the wings of the boundless air?

For the sake of Heaven, halt thy flight!

Let me lay my lips upon the throne of Troy.

For she whom I love is the pearl of the sea,

A jewel set in the crown of the ocean.

I would kiss—aye, kiss eternal—

The lips of unending Time,

That the bards might carve in song

The tale of my love.

O wind of the western deep,

Bear me upward through the gates of the sky!

Let me touch the rosy, nectar’d lips,

Let me brush the cheeks like new-blown petals,

While clad in the guise of a gentle robin,

I alight, unseen, in her eternal spring.
